Skateboarders Glossary

BACKSIDE Turns or rotations in the direction your toes point towards, so that your back is facing the outside of the arc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOARDSLIDE A trick where you lift your front truck over the lip/coping/what-have-you and slide. Also: railslide.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FAKIE Riding backwards. Your weight is balanced as in your normal stance, whereas switch-stance requires you to adjust your balance to suit a slightly different style of trick. The distinction between switch-stance and normal is fast disappearing as people now immediately learn to ride both ways.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FLIP ESSENTIALS Flip tricks are the core of modern street skating.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HARD FLIP A heelflip or kickflip varial the 'hard way.' Hard heelflip (also inside heelflip): b/s varial heelflip. Hard kickflip: f/s varial kickflip.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HEELFLIP OLLIE front foot goes to the toe side of the board, flicking
the board with the ball of the foot, flips then lands.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KICKFLIP Kickflip Ollie, Ollie kickflip, Ollie flip. Ollie, front foot goes to the heel side of the board, flicking the board with your toes,
board flips, then lands.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOLLIE KICKFLIP Ollie off the nose (nollie), kick the board with toes toward the heel side of the board with back foot.
360 flip
360 degree b/s varial kickflip
Varial
Rotation of board or body

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FRONTSIDE Turns or rotations in the direction your heels point towards, so that your front is facing towards the outside of the arc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GOOFY-FOOT Someone whose normal skate stance is with the right foot forward.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GRIND Moving along an edge (coping, bench, curb, etc.) with your trucks. Scraping your trucks along an edge as you skate.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TYPES OF GRINDS:
Crooked: nosegrind with nose sliding at the same time.
b/s feeble: back truck grinding, b/s, toe-side rail grinding edge.
50-50: both trucks grinding.
5-O: back truck grinding.
Nosegrind: front truck grinding.
f/s Smith: back truck grinding, front body facing edge, with toe-side grinding edge.
b/s Smith: back truck grinding, front body facing away from edge (back to the edge), with heel-side grinding edge.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LIPSLIPE A slide where your tail is over the deck. You can get into this by either b/s or f/s 180 Ollie, or fakieing into it, whether fakie
Ollie or just lifting your back end (tail end) up over the coping/lip/ledge. (other possibilities: fakie lipslide may be called a switch boardslide) Also: disaster slide.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MONGO-FOOT A style of pushing where the back foot is kept on the board, and pushing is done with the front foot. Very common in switch-stance
skating. Also: wrong-footed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOSE The front of the board, from the front two truck bolts to the end.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOSESLIDE Sliding the underside of the nose end of a board on a ledge or lip.

REGULAR-FOOT Someone whose normal skate stance is with the left foot forward.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SWITCH-STANCE Skateboarding in the opposite stance than accustomed to, and passing it off as 'normal'.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TAIL The back end of the board, from the back two truck bolts to the end.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TAILSLIDE Sliding the underside of the tail end of a board on a ledge or lip.

---TRICK TIPS---

Tricks Done on the Ground

MANUAL Pretty easy... while you are riding just lift your front trucks up and ride on your back trucks only. It is also known as a: wheelie, pop a wheelie, etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOSE MANUAL A nose manual is exactly the same as a manual but it is on the front wheels instead. This can be really hard to balance at first.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MUSKA NOSE MANUAL This is a hard trick to do but is sweet if you can do it. Start rolling at a comfortable speed. Then just grab the nose and the tail of your board. Now lift your feet up and do a handstand on your board. While doing a hand stand do a nose manual. That's a muska nose manual.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Launch Tricks

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OLLIE Push a few times to get rolling at a comfortable speed. Put your back foot flat across the tail, and put your front foot in the middle of the board. The farther back you put your foot, the higher you will be able to ollie, but you will also have less control. Bend you knees. Push down as hard as you can on your back foot so that your tail hits the ground. At the same time slide your front foot up towards the nose of the board, and jump. Don't let your back foot drag you down. Bring it up too. Most people can't ollie high because they only bring up their front foot, and their back foot holds the rest of the board from coming up. Keep your shoulders and legs parallel with the direction you are going. It will make it easier to land. Land on all four wheels and bend your knees to take the impact. Ride away.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOLLIE Start rolling and move your feet to the front of the board. Bend down to start your jump. Smack the nose down, jump and slide your back foot toward the tail. Once in the air begin to level out your feet as you come down and land.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FAKIE OLLIE Start rolling and ride the way you normally wouldn't. Then move your feet to the front of the board. Bend down to start your jump. Smack the nose down, jump and slide your back foot toward the tail. Once in the air begin to level out your feet as you come down and land.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SWITCH OLLIE Push a few times to get rolling at a comfortable speed. Put your back foot flat across the tail, and put your front foot in the middle of the board. The farther back you put your foot, the higher you will be able to ollie, but you will also have less control. Setting up will probably take longer then it does when riding regular, and you might lose your balance at first, so try increasing the amount of time that you ride around switch to develop better riding skills. Bend you knees. Push down as hard as you can on your back foot so that your tail hits the ground. At the same time slide your front foot up towards the nose of the board, and jump. If your tail isn't hitting the ground, you obviously need to try harder. You will probably feel very uncoordinated, but that is normal. Keep your shoulders and legs parallel with the direction you are going. It will make it easier to land. Land on all four wheels and bend you knees to take the impact. Ride away.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Flip Tricks

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KICKFLIP Push a few times to get rolling at a comfortable speed. Put your back foot flat across the tail ,and place your front foot just behind the front truck bolts. Bend you knees. Push down as hard as you can on your back foot so that you tail hits the ground. Kick your front foot down AND out to the side using your toe. Try hitting a corner of the nose to make the board flip easier. Keep your shoulders and legs parallel with the direction you are going. That will make the landing easier. Let the board flip completely and catch it with your back foot. Land on all four wheels and bend you knees to take the impact and ride away.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HEELFLIP Push a few times to get rolling at a comfortable speed. Put your back foot flat across the tail ,and place your front foot just behind the front truck bolts. Bend you knees. Push down as hard as you can on your back foot so that you tail hits the ground. Kick your front foot down AND out to the side using your heel. Try hitting a corner of the nose to make the board flip easier. Keep your shoulders and legs parallel with the direction you are going. That will make the landing easier. Let the board flip completely and catch it with your back foot. The board should have done the same thing as a kickflip but flipping the opposite direction. Land on all four wheels and bend you knees to take the impact and ride away

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

POP SHUVIT Put front foot angled near the center of board and your back foot on the tail. Hit your tail like you are about to start an ollie and kick your front foot forward. After the board has done a 180 degree spin, catch it with your feet and land.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

360 SHUVIT Put your front foot angled near the center of board and your back foot on the tail. Hit your tail like you are about to start an ollie and kick your front foot forward. Even harder than a regular pop shuv it. After the board has done a 360 degree spin, catch it with your feet and land.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VARIAL FLIP It is essential that you know the pop shove-it and kickflip before attempting this trick. The best way to put your feet is with your back foot on the toe edge of the tail, and with your front foot at about a 45 degree angle and your toe on the heel edge. It should be about 2 or 3 inches from the bolts. This whole thing is simultaneous. Hit the tail. Push your back foot to the heel edge like a pop shove-it. Slide your front foot forward and towards the edge, flipping the board. Try to keep your board underneath your feet. Try to keep your feet out of the way while it's flipping around. Then when it has turned a 180 and flipped "catch the board", as in get your feet back into the normal position for riding in the air. Land and keep your weight centered or else you will slip.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

VARIAL HEELFLIP It is essential that you know the pop shove-it and heelflip before attempting this trick. The best way to put your feet is with your back foot on the toe edge of the tail, and with your front foot on the toe edge.

Grab Tricks

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOSEGRAB Roll slow, unless you are going off a ramp or something high. Ollie and pop as hard as you can. Crouch down low when you are going up in the air. When you are at the top of your ollie grab the your board with your front hand on the nose. Hold until you are about to touch the ground. Land with your knees bent to absorb the shock Ride Away

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MUTE Roll slow, unless you are going off a ramp or something high. Ollie and pop as hard as you can. Crouch down low when you are going up in the air. When you are at the top of your ollie grab the your board with your front hand and in between your feet. Hold until you are about to touch the ground. Land with your knees bent to absorb the shock Ride Away

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

INDY Roll slow, unless you are going off a ramp or something high. Ollie and pop as hard as you can. Crouch down low when you are going up in the air. When you are at the top of your ollie grab the your board with your back hand and in between your feet. Hold until you are about to touch the ground. Land with your knees bent to absorb the shock Ride Away.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MELON Roll slow, unless you are going off a ramp or something high. Ollie and pop as hard as you can. Crouch down low when you are going up in the air. When you are at the top of your ollie grab the your board behind you but still in between your feet. Hold until you are about to touch the ground. Land with your knees bent to absorb the shock Ride Away

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TAILGRAB Roll slow, unless you are going off a ramp or something high. Ollie and pop as hard as you can. Crouch down low when you are going up in the air. When you are at the top of your ollie grab the your board with your back hand on the tail. Hold until you are about to touch the ground. Land with your knees bent to absorb the shock Ride Away

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROASTBEEF Roll slow, unless you are going off a ramp or something high. Ollie and pop as hard as you can. Crouch down low when you are going up in the air. When you are at the top of your ollie grab the your board with your back hand on the tail and make your your hand is going through your legs. Hold until you are about to touch the ground. Land with your knees bent to absorb the shock Ride Away

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Grind Tricks

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5050 Find a grindable rail, ledge or whatever. I find it easier to learn on a ledge, so you might want to try there first. Push a few times and get some speed. The faster you go, the longer you will be able to grind for. Ride parallel up to the object you're going to grind with your feet as you would have them an ollie. Bend your knees and pop your tail. Land with both trucks evenly on the object. Try and land with your feet still in the ollie position so that it is easier to pop off. When you're at the end of the object give your tail a slight pop and land back on the ground on all four wheels. Ride away.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5-0 Push a few times and get some speed, the faster the longer you will be able to grind for. Ride parallel up to the object you're going to grind with your feet as you would have them an ollie. Bend your knees and pop your tail. Ollie up and push down on the tail a bit so that only your back truck lands on the object. Keep you're balance using your arms. It doesn't matter whether your tail touches or not. When you're at the end of the object give your tail a slight pop and land back on the ground on all four wheels. Ride away.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOSEGRIND Push a few times and get some speed, the faster the longer you will be able to grind for. Ride parallel up to the object you're going to grind with your feet as you would have them an ollie. Bend your knees and pop your tail. Ollie up and push down on the nose a bit so that only your front truck lands on the object. Keep you're balance using your arms. It doesn't matter whether your nose touches or not. When you're at the end of the object give your tail a slight pop and land back on the ground on all four wheels. Ride away.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOARDSLIDE Push a few times and get some speed. The faster you go, the longer you will be able to slide for. Ride parallel to the obstacle. Bend your knees and pop your tail. Ollie and turn 90 degrees. Make sure your front trucks clear the obstacle and land on the middle part of your board. Lean forward a little if it is a fast sliding obstacle, or back a little bit if it is a slow sliding obstacle. Keep your balance and slide until the end. When you're at the end of the object begin to turn back slightly. Complete your turn back once you are off of the obstacle. Land on all four wheels and ride away

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LIPSLIDE This is almost the same as a boardslide so don't get mixed up between the two. Push a few times and get some speed. The faster you go, the longer you will be able to slide for. Ride parallel to the obstacle. Bend your knees and pop your tail. Ollie and turn 90 degrees so that your back trucks go over the rail and land in a boardslide. Keep your balance and slide until the end. When you're at the end of the object begin to turn slightly. Complete your turn back once you are off of the obstacle. Land on all four wheels and ride away

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOSESLIDE Roll at a good pace toward the object. Try and be either parallel to the object or rolling towards it at a slight angle. When you're close enough, pop the board up and turn the board so that the nose lands on the rail and slide along. Ride off the end and turn 90 degrees and roll away.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SMITH Approach the obstacle from a slight angle. It helps to have a little bit of speed to be able to slide well. Hit the tail and ollie onto the obstacle, but turn a little similar to a 180, but not all the way around. The smith grind is kind of between a lipslide and a 50-50. Get your back truck on and put your nose down so the front truck is off the rail to the side but down. Keep your back foot on the tail and your front foot as near to the front bolts as possible. remember to keep some weight on your back foot so that you can slide, because if you put too much weight on your front foot you will stick and fall forward. Also remember not to put too much weight on your back foot, because then you will go into a 5-0 grind. Slide until you're ready to come off, or until the obstacle ends. If the obstacle ends, simply slide off and adjust your weight level over the board to land and ride away. If it doesn't end, try to do a sort of ollie off the obstacle by hitting your tail and popping off. Land level and ride away.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SALAD GRIND Do the exact same thing as a smith but put your front up instead of down so you are basically doing a crooked 5-0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CROOKED Do the exact same thing as a nose grind but the board is crooked, kind of a cross between a salad grind and a nose grind.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stalls

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*NOTE: stalls can be preformed on a curb, ledge, or on a halfpipe lip as well.

NOSESTALL Go up to the ledge/lip that you want to stall on. All you have to do is lift your nose onto the ledge/lip and stall for a second and go back down the quarter pipe or if it was a ledge just ride off.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TAILSTALL Go up to the ledge/lip that you want to stall on. Do a 180 and land on your tail on the ledge/lip and stall for a second and go back down the quarter pipe or if it was a ledge just ride off.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AXLESTALL Go up to the ledge/lip that you want to stall on. Do a 90 degree turn and land on both trucks doing a 5050 without moving and stall for a second and go back down the quarter pipe or if it was a ledge just ride off.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BOARDSTALL/ROCK N ROLL Go up to the ledge/lip that you want to stall on. Go to the ledge and ollie and land on the board doing a boardslide without moving and stall for a second and go back down the quarter pipe or if it was a ledge just turn a 180 to get off.
